Washburn Tunnel closed for weekend repairs

Harris County Precinct Two Commissioner Jack Morman announced that the Washburn Tunnel will be closed for repairs during three upcoming weekends:

12 a.m. (midnight) Friday, March 16th until 4 a.m. Monday, March 19th
12 a.m. (midnight) Friday, March 23rd until 4 a.m. Monday, March 26th
12 a.m. (midnight) Friday, March 30th until 4 a.m. Monday, April 2nd

The tunnel, which runs beneath the Houston Ship Channel between Galena Park and Pasadena, will shutdown to repair damage caused to the tunnel’s northern entrance during an accident involving an 18” wheel truck in late 2010.

“We want to inconvenience our citizens as little as possible. We’ll expand the Lynchburg Ferry’s weekend hours and encourage motorists to use alternate routes.” said Commissioner Morman.

The Lynchburg Ferry will operate at normal weekday hours from 4:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the three weekends listed above to assist in the traffic flow. Alternate routes across the Ship Channel available include the 610 East Loop Freeway bridge, the East Sam Houston Parkway North toll bridge and Highway 146/Fred Hartman Bridge.

Emergency Vehicle Access: Emergency vehicles in route will be allowed passage through the tunnel after stopping at the North or South guard station for access.
