HOUSTON (August 31, 2007) – Houston TranStar announces the addition of thirty-seven new closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras along the Westpark Tollway from the Westpark Drive exit to SH 99. Images from available cameras are on the Houston TranStar Real-Time Traffic Map at www.houstontranstar.org.

The additions are part of the ongoing partnership between the Houston District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA).

In total, there are more than 489 CCTV cameras along state roadways and major county arterials, as well as 73 hurricane evacuation route cameras, some as far as 150 miles from Houston TranStar. The cameras feed video into the TranStar center, where employees monitor traffic conditions around the clock. Still images are projected onto the public web site, www.houstontranstar.org.

The Houston TranStar website is accessed by approximately 320,000 unique visitors each month and with well over 100 million accesses in the last year . This level of internet activity makes the website one of the most visited transportation web pages in the nation.

Houston TranStar is a collaboration between four government agencies that coordinate and enhance transportation and emergency management services, responding to incidents and emergencies in Harris County and beyond. Sharing their resources to serve area residents, the agencies are the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Harris County, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (Metro) and the City of Houston.
